Horizontal wood paneling is in vogue again, after the unfortunate faux wood-grain varieties that made it less than desirable.
But people are updating the look, using salvaged materials and creamy painted finishes, for a fresh interior surface. For a more sophisticated, traditional, and slightly country aesthetic, smaller tongue and groove panels painted a soft matte white or beige works nicely.
Wood ceilings and heavy timber beams painted white … It brings to mind bucolic summer vacations and Vera Bradley catalogs. and I might need to wrap my head with an ace bandage because I think it is about to explode. We kept mumbling to ourselves that this would be a lot easier if we simply masked off the floor and sprayed the entire room.

When we decided we wanted to do a wood planked ceiling in our sunroom, I think I kind of just envision walking into Home Depot, strolling down the beadboard ceiling aisle, and loading up our cart. Except between each board is a little ridge or indentation, aka the “bead.” Just look at this assortment of choices… You know, those full 4ft x 8ft sheets of the beadboard pattern?
Historically, beadboard was made up of individual tongue-and-groove planks – kinda like a hardwood floor.
